Polytunnels or high tunnels as well as hot houses are a smart solution for the agricultural industry. They enable for the cultivation of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and other plants all year round. The volume of quantity from greenhouse crop growth is sustainably higher than from cultivation of crops in an open field. Another advantage of cultivating crops inside greenhouses and polytunnels is high quality of the produce. All this can be achieved in a relative short period of time, which only adds to the usefulness of greenhouse crop cultivation.
A typical polytunnel, high tunnel or hot house offers protection from any outside factors, such as different weather conditions; wind, rain, hail or snow. Moreover, no animals have access to crops, thus making it impossible to have our fruit, vegetables or flowers destroyed. Different technical solutions offer a variety of useful mechanisms, which speed up the whole process of cultivation and add to its better quality. There are irrigation and fertilization control systems available. In order to improve crop growth conditions you are able to maintain a different climate than that outside. The greenhouse system also offers a tool of pesticides application, which will protect crops from pests and diseases. Working and harvesting is possible in any kind of weather, unlike in open areas.
Depending on natural conditions; weather and climate; different technical solutions must be applied in order to reach the same goal, which is making the most of crops cultivation.
In areas with tropical climate polytunnels normally have a simple structure and are not equipped with different technical means of monitoring and control. They are usually covered with thin plastic sheets which function as protection from winds and other harms done by nature.
In areas with a more differentiated climate; like Europe, the US and Russia; where there are often very cold winters and hot summers, it requires more complex systems to achieve goals. Thus the systems may be more expensive to implement and maintain. For example, in winter there might be a necessity for using heating systems and in summer cooling systems.
The key to a successful business is to find the best and most efficient solution for any climate in a particular region of the world. Sometimes the initial input in the investment might seem high, but with proper handling and maintenance benefits in the long run should pay off.
